How to Limit MacBook Charging to 80%
Lithium-ion batteries age faster when they sit at full charge. Holding a MacBook at 100% for hours every day shortens its total cycle life, which is why the 80% rule exists. The good news is that macOS now ships a built-in charge limit, and the important caveat is that it does not cover every case. This guide walks through the native toggle in macOS Tahoe, the older Optimized Battery Charging fallback, and the third-party apps that go further.
Quick answer
If you have an Apple Silicon MacBook on macOS Tahoe 26.4 or later, open System Settings, go to Battery, click the information button next to Charging, and choose 80%. Done. It is native and good enough for most people.
If you are on an older Mac, on Intel, or you want to cap lower than 80% for storage or a deeper daily limit, you need a third-party tool. AlDente has the longest track record and reaches roughly 20%. Why 80% matters for your MacBook battery
A lithium-ion cell is under the most chemical stress at two extremes: near empty and near full. The middle of the charge range, roughly 20% to 80%, is where the cell is happiest. Research from Battery University and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory both point the same direction: the more time a battery spends close to 100%, the faster its maximum capacity drops over its cycle life.
A MacBook plugged in all week sits at 100% for most of its life. That is the worst case for long-term capacity, even though it feels convenient. Capping the charge at 80% removes most of that stress. The goal is not to hit an exact number. It is to minimize the hours the battery spends pinned at full.
There is a tradeoff worth naming. An 80% cap means you only ever have 80% to spend, so a long flight or a busy day away from a charger will leave you with less headroom. For a desktop-replacement MacBook that rarely leaves the desk, capping is almost always worth it. For a MacBook that travels daily, the math is less clear.
The native charge limit in macOS Tahoe 26.4
For years the most-requested missing feature on Mac was a hard charge limit. Apple finally shipped one in macOS Tahoe 26.4. Per Apple's battery charging support document, supported Macs get a Charge Limit control in System Settings that runs from 80% to 100%.
The Mac charges to within a few percent of your chosen limit, then stops. It resumes only if the battery drops more than 5% below the limit. That is a real, enforced cap, unlike the older Optimized Battery Charging behavior. It still lets the battery reach 100% occasionally to recalibrate the gauge, which is healthy and expected.
The catches are real, though. The native limit is Apple Silicon only. Intel Macs get the older fallback instead. The slider bottoms out at 80%, so you cannot cap at 60% or 70% for long-term storage. And there is no Sailing Mode that discharges down to a target while plugged in. If you need any of those, the built-in toggle is not enough.
Optimized Battery Charging, the older fallback
Before the hard limit existed, every Mac since macOS Big Sur 11 shipped with Optimized Battery Charging. It is still what Intel Macs and any Mac not running Tahoe 26.4 will use. It is not a cap. It is a scheduling trick.
It uses on-device machine learning to learn your daily routine, then holds the charge around 80% with a "Charging On Hold" status until just before it predicts you will unplug. The idea is that the battery spends fewer hours at 100% overnight without you having to think about it. When your habits are predictable, it works.
When your habits vary, it does not. Many users report it charging to 100% anyway because the routine never stabilizes, or because they unplugged early, or because they travel. It also still hits 100% periodically to recalibrate the gauge. If you genuinely want a hard 80% ceiling and you are on an Intel Mac or an older macOS, Optimized Battery Charging will not give you one. A third-party tool is the only path.
Third-party apps: AlDente and MacBookBatteryMonitor
Third-party charge limiters talk to the system management controller directly and can do things the native slider cannot. The two worth knowing are AlDente and MacBookBatteryMonitor.
AlDente, the established option
AlDente is the established third-party option in this category. Which method should you use
Match the method to your Mac and to how far below 80% you actually need to go. Here is how the choice breaks down in practice.
- Apple silicon Mac on Tahoe 26.4, happy with an 80% cap: use the native control. It is already installed and enough for most people.
- Intel Mac, or any Mac on macOS 14 or earlier: the native limit is not available to you. Optimized Battery Charging is better than nothing, but for a real cap you need AlDente (it supports Intel) or another SMC-based tool.
